Spring Fine Motor Flower Craft for Preschoolers

This spring flower craft is excellent fine motor work for preschoolers. The materials are simple and cheap, and it’s perfect for a rainy spring day. You can also use it as a book extension craft, or even a mother’s day card.

I set out the materials for this simple flower craft, and my girls were curious. I didn’t tell them what I was making. When they realized it was a flower, they wanted to make their own.

Flower Craft Materials

You’ll need:

  • Colored straws
  • Child size scissors
  • School glue
  • Pompoms
  • Construction paper

You can offer the glue straight from the bottle, or squirt it into a small container and provide a paintbrush to spread it.

Flower Craft Instructions

I thought I’d have to help my girls (age 6) glue the flower stems, but they insisted on doing it themselves. And they did a great job!

The only real problem we had was that in our box of 40 straws, only 2 were green. Oh well. Who needs a green stem when you can have pretty pink and blue ones.

Here’s the simple process:

  • Choose a straw for the flower stem and glue it to the construction paper.
  • Choose a pompom for the flower center, and glue it to the paper at the top of the straw.
  • For the flower petals, cut one straw into segments approximately 1-inch long each. Glue them around the pompoms.

Craft Extension

When the kids have had enough of flower making, you can let them continue to use the materials creatively. My girls used the paper plates that I’d laid the pompoms and straws on.

Sophie decided to make faces. Isabella copied her and added the idea of making them “drink” from straws. I love watching the synergy of my twins being creative together.

I think I might like these crazy faces even more than our flowers.
