12+ Children’s Books About Riding the School Bus

When my oldest started school, the thing he was most excited about wasn’t actually school. It was riding the school bus.

My girls, on the other hand, were a little nervous about it. Even though they’d waited at the bus stop with me every day for Liam, the big bus intimidated them. We had to do a lot of talking about it. And it helped that they got on with their brother.

Whether your child is super excited or a bit nervous, you’ll enjoy reading these books about riding the school bus with them. Most of them aren’t exclusively books about riding the school bus, but they all address it in one way or another.

School Bus Books for Toddlers & Preschoolers

The Little School Bus is a rhyming cumulative tale simple enough for kids headed to PreK on a big yellow bus.

School Bus is even simpler. Fun for toddler siblings.

Pete the Cat: The Wheels on the Bus  features the classic Wheels on the Bus song lyrics with a twist. Fun for younger kids and Pete fans.

The Bus for Us is simple, repetitive, and engaging for younger readers.

How Do Dinosaurs Go To School? Includes a page that mentions riding the bus “Is he late for the bus…does he make a fuss?”

Muddypaws Goes to School A puppy follows his boy-owner’s school bus, and gets into all kinds of trouble at school before he’s discovered. You may like our craft activity to go with this story.

Biscuit Goes to School Biscuit’s little girl owner gets on the school bus, and Biscuit finds his way to school anyway.

School Bus Books for Kindergarten & Early Elementary

Most of these would be fine for more advanced preschoolers too, depending on the child.

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa: School Days – In one of the short, fully illustrated chapters, Cocoa the horse follows Cowgirl Kate’s bus to school.

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes – This more traditional Pete book pictures him on the school bus.

How Will I Get to School This Year? Refers to the bus as “smelly” and provides lots of funny, creative alternative ways to get to school.

This Is the Way We Go to School: A Book About Children Around the World puts the school bus into a larger worldview.

Franklin Goes to School chronicles Franklin the Turtle’s first day of school, includes nervously getting on the bus.

Manners on the School Bus may be a good choice for kids who need extra support in behaving on the bus.

Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus is an early chapter book. You’ll want to discuss as you read aloud. Junie B. is no role model, but she does some crazy, funny things. (She also says “stupid” a lot.)

 

My girls are headed to first grade this year, and completely comfortable with the school bus now. They love playing at the bus stop and riding with their friends. I wish I’d made this list of books about riding the school bus last year, though. I think it would’ve helped soothe their nervousness.
