Shiny Kids’ Printable Christmas Ornament Craft

This free printable Christmas ornament craft is quick and inexpensive – just right for classroom holiday parties, at scout meetings, or at home when time is short.

We were late putting up our Christmas tree this year. I always aim to do it the weekend after Thanksgiving, but life sometimes gets in the way. This year, we hosted Thanksgiving dinner, and went to the Renaissance Festival the next day. By Saturday, I was pooped.

When we did finally get our act together – the following weekend — I let the kids do most of the tree decorating. This is the first year that my girls did a halfway decent job at spreading the ornaments out around the tree.

Well, they spread them out around the bottom of the tree. I still had to help with the top. Our tree is ridiculously tall, and the very tip-top is still pretty bare.

We love it all the same.

Most of all, I love pulling out our homemade ornaments. It’s like seeing old friends again. Those kid-made tissue paper and glue creations tug at my nostalgic heartstrings.

I imagine that the ornaments we’re making this year will make me feel the same way in a few more years.

Printable Christmas Ornament Craft

We love the foil technique we used last year for kid-made Christmas cards, as well as for our popular rocket craft. It keeps the foil from crinkling, and it makes cutting out just the right shape easy.

Plus, they’re fun to decorate!

I keep pretty tight control of the permanent markers at our house. The kids aren’t allowed to use them without my direct supervision. So when I do get them out, it’s a treat.

After looking at the sample I made, Sophie tried to draw a Christmas tree on hers (the one on the left, below). I don’t think it came out the way she envisioned, but I love it all the same.

Materials

The magic ingredients here are the spray glue and my free printable. They make the preparation really quick.

• Printout of ornaments (at the bottom of this post)
• Aluminum foil
• Spray glue (ad)
• Scissors
• Hole punch
• Clear tape (optional)
• Permanent markers
• Ribbon

Instructions

1. Cover your work area, and spray glue on the back of the printout. Then, adhere it to the dull side of a sheet of aluminum foil. (I do this step before the kids are involved).
2. Cut out the ornament shapes, and punch a hole for the ribbon. (Optional: You may want to reinforce the paper/foil with clear tape before punching the hole.)

3. Decorate with permanent markers.

4. Attach a ribbon.

The back of these is just paper – perfect for writing children’s names and the year. …making them a part of future Christmas nostalgia.
