Inside: how to make a popsicle stick unicorn craft with kids

I’m super excited about this cute unicorn craft I came up with the other day. My own girls aren’t really unicorn fans – in fact, they’re very anti-unicorn… but I had a Girl Scout meeting to plan!
I made up a sample craft and gathered the supplies for each girl to make her own unicorn. Sure enough, all our Daisies and Brownies except my own twins were eager to make these guys.
We’re turning ours into Christmas ornaments, but you could really make these any time of year. They would also make really cute puppets.

Unicorn Craft – Materials & Preparation
Make sure you get googly eyes that are the right size for the craft sticks you choose. I used 8 mm eyes and craft sticks that are about 12 mm wide. Here’s the complete list of the supplies you’ll need:
- Craft sticks
- Googly eyes with eye lashes
- White acrylic paint & paintbrush
- Glue
- Pink and white construction paper
- Scissors
- Sparkly pink pipe cleaners
- Hot glue gun
- Sparkly silver fun foam – I used the self-adhesive kind
- Fine tip paint pen or permanent marker
- Yarn (optional – if you want to hang it up as an ornament)
I didn’t want to mess with paint at our meeting, so I painted all the craft sticks white ahead of time.
I also cut the mane pieces and unicorn horns ahead.
As soon as the kids begin working, start heating up your hot glue gun a safe distance away. I have a high temperature one, so I did the hot gluing for them.
Unicorn Craft – Instructions
First, if you haven’t already done so ahead of time, paint the craft sticks white and let dry.
Then, cut out unicorn horns from the fun foam and 1-inch long mane pieces from the pipe cleaners.
Next, add the unicorn features to each craft stick in the following order:
- Cut out pink ear shapes and then smaller white inner ears and glue together. Then, glue them onto the top of the craft stick.
- Attach the horn.
- Glue on the eyes.
- Draw on the nostrils and mouth.
Finally, have an adult hot glue 3 mane pieces onto the back. Some of our girls had very specific instructions for me regarding how they wanted their manes to be glued!
If you want to add a yarn hanger, you can also hot glue it on at this time.
Once the hot glue has cooled, you can bend the mane into whatever shape you prefer.
And, if you have any kids who don’t like unicorns, go ahead and let them get creative. My twins made reindeer!
