F is for Flamingo Craft

Inside: How to make a low-prep torn paper flamingo craft with preschool or kindergarten students. This project uses just a free printable and basic supplies.

Free Torn Paper Flamingo Craft

Flamingos are such a fun bird! What’s not to love about a pink bird? My only complaint is that I have to visit a zoo or pull up a flamingo video to see them.

We do have roseate spoonbills here in this part of Texas, but we hardly ever get the privilege of seeing them. Some people confuse them with flamingoes because they are both pink birds. However, flamingoes are much larger and have a different shape of beak.

Flamingos are certainly better known, and they make for a cute craft. They also happen to be perfect for helping preschoolers learn the letter F. Notice how if they stand just right, they almost, but not quite, look like the letter F?

Flamingo Craft

After teaching your students about birds in general and talking about flamingos specifically, plus reviewing the Letter F, you’re ready to get crafting…

Skills Covered

This activity mostly works on eye-hand coordination and strengthening those little hands to prepare them for writing later. Be sure to have the kids color in the letter F and talk about the /f/ sound to reinforce that skill as well. With this craft, you’ll be able to cover the following:

  • Fine motor skills – tearing and gluing paper, cutting out templates
  • Letter recognition – visualizing the letter F and connecting it to the /f/ sound

Materials Needed

You’ll only need some basic supplies to make this flamingo craft:

  • Pink paper in two or more shades
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, markers, or watercolor paint
  • Googly eye (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Students will glue torn paper onto two different cutout pieces and color the remainder of the flamingo craft as shown.

  1. Begin by coloring the flamingo page, except leave the body blank because you will be covering that up later.

  1. Next, cut out the body and wing pieces (you may need to help younger kids with this step).
  2. Glue torn paper onto the body. You don’t need to fill the middle (but it’s okay if you do). Alternatively, you could glue the torn paper straight onto the flamingo page; however, having a separate body piece helps little ones glue to the right area rather than all over the page.
    1. Now, glue a different shade of pink onto the wing piece, and then glue that wing onto the body.
    1. Finally, glue the body/wing piece onto the flamingo. Be sure to write the child’s name on the page. Won’t these look cute on a bird-themed or summer bulletin board?!
