There’s nothing like a birthday for making a child feel special. You can add to their self-esteem by helping them learn the letters in their very own name!

Who is this Name Activity For?

This editable birthday activity is perfect for children who are turning 4 or 5. New 4-year-olds will likely need help cutting and putting the letters in order. Children turning 5 may be able to do this activity more independently. Name spelling is probably a review for 6-year-olds, but kids who like coloring, cutting, and gluing may enjoy it.

What Skills are Taught?

You can give students practice with the following skills:

  • Letter recognition
  • Name spelling
  • Fine motor skills

What’s in the Free Printable and How Does it Work?

This free printable name activity is a mini-version of some of my paid products, such as my Themed Name Activities bundle and my Monthly Name Practice bundle.

You’ll get a PDF that you can type student names into using Adobe Reader on a computer (it won’t work on a mobile device). It looks like this:

There is space for two student names up to 12 letters long. The first 8 letters print on one page, and then there is an extra page you can print for longer names. After you print, you can overwrite with two more names.

You may want to make a set for each child in your class at the beginning of the year. Then just hold them in your student files until each child’s birthday.

Activity Instructions

Once you have a printed worksheet for each child, you can start by having them color the cupcakes with their name letters.

Then, you or the child should cut out the cupcakes on the dotted lines. You can also cut off the top section so they can see their whole name already spelled out.

Finally, glue the letters onto a sentence strip or other 3-inch tall strip of colored paper.
