Print a Christmas Mini Word Wall

Here is a
simple way to bring literacy into your home at Christmas time. I’ve put
together a free printable mini word wall for your little reader’s room or
playroom.  Kids who aren’t quite reading
may like to look at the holiday words and pictures too.

My girls made
a stack of shiny Christmas cards last weekend. They wanted to write a
message in every card they’d made. It was a slow process, at first. They’re
usually happy to just spell phonetically, but not for something as important as
a letter to special family members.
I had to
spell every letter of every word for them.
So when I
went to take down our Fall Word Wall from the playroom, I realized that
I really needed to make a Christmas word wall.
I pulled the
old stuff off the corkboard tile, and got out some bits and pieces for
December.

The sheet of
red felt only overlapped a tiny bit, so I didn’t bother to trim it.

I tried making
a border with just this green ribbon I had on hand. I put small circles of green felt at the corners.

It still needed something, so I added some red ribbon.

I used white
glue and staples to attach everything. Except the felt stuck on its own to the
cork board. I just gave it some staples where the ribbon overlapped it.

About
Word Walls
There’s academic research behind word walls.
They’re good for teaching kids print awareness, sight words and vocabulary.
It’s all part of creating a print-rich environment, which supports learning. It
also models the importance of literacy.
You usually only see word walls in school, but
I think it’s fun (and educational) to have a small seasonal one like this at
home too.
You can print out the clip art I used, or put
together your own. A cork board tile worked well for me, but corrugated
cardboard would also do. Or you could just put it on your fridge with a magnet –
your kids won’t care!
The important part is that you’re doing another
small thing towards building a lifelong love of words and reading.  If you do create your own mini-word wall, I’d
love to see your results. Follow me on Instagram and be sure to
tag me when you post your version of the word wall.
