Reindeer Alphabet Activity
This free printable reindeer alphabet activity is self-checking and also provides engaging fine motor skills practice.
Letter Matching with Santa and His Reindeer
When your students are wide-eyed with excitement waiting for Christmas, it’s not hard to turn that energy into engagement! Read aloud books about Santa and pull out this cute hands-on letter-matching activity featuring Santa and his reindeer.
Skills Covered
This activity helps reinforce the following skills:
- Letter recognition
- Uppercase-lowercase letter matching
- Matching letter sound pictures to letters
- Letter tracing, if you use the recording sheets
What’s Included in the Free Printable
This is a large freebie! You’ll get an 11-page pdf file:
- 9 pages of cards, with 4 cards for each letter of the alphabet
- 2 simple recording sheets – one for tracing lowercase letters and the other for tracing uppercase letters.
Look for the download section at the bottom of this post to grab your copy.
Preparation & Materials
There are two ways to use these cards. You can connect them with plastic links, or with ribbon or lacing cord.
Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Free printable (see the end of this post)
- Plastic links or ribbon/lacing cord
- Regular hole punch
- Long-handled hole punch (optional – see note below)
- Scissors or paper cutter
- Crayons or markers for recording sheets
To prepare this activity, first cut out the cards. You may want to laminate them too. Then, punch holes where the black circles are printed. If you want to use ribbon to make “reins” you’ll also need a long-handled hole punch to reach those spots – or in a pinch, you can carefully make a hole with sharp scissors or an Exacto knife. You can follow my picture here:
How to Play
You can differentiate this activity to adjust for students’ abilities. For instance, some students will need a smaller number of letter choices, and some will be ready to distinguish a large pile of cards. You can also choose to leave out the letter sound cards if students aren’t ready for them yet, or you can pre-attach those for them.
Once students have connected a set of cards, they can find that letter on their recording sheet and trace it. Or, you could even have them dot it with a bingo dauber if they aren’t ready for tracing.
