S’mores are a classic summer treat! Now, your kids can use this themed S’mores Writing Tray to practice writing their letters!
Simply print out the free printable letter formation cards, grab some graham crackers, and you’re ready to go.
Summer literacy activities like this one are a fun way to keep your preschoolers and kindergarteners learning the ABC’s all summer long.
For young children just learning how to write, writing trays can be a great way to help them practice letter formation.
In addition, they can be a great sensory activity, as kids can explore different textures and materials while they practice their writing.
Most importantly, though, writing trays provide a fun and creative way for students to learn an essential skill.
Getting Ready to Use the S’mores Writing Tray:
What’s Included:
- 52 S’more Letter Formation Cards
What Else Is Needed:
- White Card Stock or Copy Paper
- Scissors
- Writing Tray
- Graham Crackers
- Marshmallows
- Chocolate Bars (optional)
To get the letter formation cards, click the image link at the bottom of this post. After receiving the email with the printables, download and print the cards on white card stock or copy paper.
If you want your kids to reuse this activity, laminate the printables before cutting the cards apart.
To set up the writing tray for your children to use, first crumble up a few graham crackers. You won’t need very many.
Next, spread the graham cracker crumbles on a writing tray. For this activity, we used a metal cake pan.
Instead of using graham cracker crumbles in the writing tray, you can also use brown rice, flour, or cornmeal.
How to Use the S’mores Writing Tray:
First, your kids will select a letter formation card and identify the letter on it.
They will then practice writing that letter in the graham cracker crumbles.
Your young learners can also use marshmallows or chocolate bars to form the letter.
After forming the letter, they can smooth the graham cracker crumbles and practice writing another letter.
This camping-themed activity is a fun, hands-on way for your preschoolers and kindergarteners to practice writing capital and lowercase letters this summer.
Activity Modifications and Extensions:
If your children are just starting to learn the letters of the alphabet, start with just a few cards at the beginning. Most young kids are eager to learn the letters in their names first.
As their letter knowledge increases, you can add 4 or 5 more cards every time they do this activity until they know them all.
If your young learners already know the letter names and how they are formed, you can give them a sound and have them write the letter that makes that sound in the tray.
