Free Editable Winter Hat Name Craft for Kids

Your kids will be thrilled to decorate their own winter hats with this editable winter hat name craft! They’re a fantastic way to practice letter identification, scissor skills, and spelling their own name, and they look fabulous on a winter or holiday bulletin board!

These editable hats are so much fun and very easy to customize! Thanks to Adobe Acrobat, you can easily add your students’ names and the letters of the names to the template, saving you lots of time.

This is a great activity to do in small groups or 1:1, especially for preschoolers. They might need a little help layering the letter circles so you can see them, too!

Skills Covered

This activity is wonderful for early learners in pre-K or Kindergarten who are still learning how to spell their names. The different steps are great for teaching these important skills:

  • Spelling their name
  • Letter identification
  • Fine motor skills (cutting, gluing, and coloring)

What’s Included in the Free Printable

This free download has several important pieces! The entire hat is editable using Adobe Acrobat, so you can add as much (or as little) detail as you’d like.

  • Printable template with personalizable hat stripes, pom poms, puff balls, hat bases, hat trim, and the face template
Your little ones’ face drawings will be so much more adorable than this example!!

Preparation & Materials

You’ll need the following supplies:

  • Printed hat template with pre-cut details
  • A bag or paper clip to hold the pieces together
  • Construction paper for backing (optional)
  • Scissors
  • 1-inch circle punch (optional)
  • Glue sticks
  • Coloring supplies

To prepare this for your students, start by customizing the templates in Adobe Reader. You will add each student’s name to the hat stripe, the first letter of their name to the pom pom, and the individual letters in their name for the smaller circles.

I made you a little video that explains how to do the computer part of this prep work – it really is easy:

Once the names and details are all set, print out everything. You can print some of the pages onto colored paper like I did, or you can print everything on white and let the kids color them in on their own.

I sized the circle letters to cut out with a 1″ punch if you have one, or you can cut them by hand if you don’t. Cut out all the other individual pieces too. Store them all in a bag or clipped together to make them easy to distribute!

How to Use

The goal is to have students complete the hat by adding their name strip, the large pom pom on top, and then gluing the individual letters of their name in order on the trim. They can then glue the hat to the face template and draw in their face!

If you’d like, students can cut out the face to create the most adorable holiday bulletin board! They also look great glued a piece of colorful construction paper.
